49ers waive Billy Cundiff

The Billy Cundiff era (if you can call it an era) is over after 17 days.

The 49ers on Friday waived Cundiff, who they brought in on Jan. 1 to compete with erratic incumbent David Akers for the team’s kicker position moving forward.

Akers won the job for last week’s divisional round game against the Packers (going 1-for-1 on field goals—a 36-yarder), but Jim Harbaugh kept Cundiff on the 53-man roster. With Cundiff’s departure, Akers has likely won the job for good, unless he melts down against the Falcons and the 49ers still make the Super Bowl.
