Scott Gomez signs 1-year deal with Sharks

gomezVeteran center Scott Gomez and the Sharks came to terms on a contract on Wednesday, an expected move several days in the making.

The one-year deal is reportedly worth $700,000. To make room for Gomez on the 23-man roster, the Sharks placed Brent Burns on the injured reserve.

Gomez, 33, had been working out with the Sharks since the weekend and accompanied the team on their recent two-game road trip in Alberta.

Gomez has won two Stanley Cups with the New Jersey Devils in his career. After a disappointing previous two seasons, the Canadiens parted ways Gomez after the lockout ended.

The Sharks hope Gomez can be a playmaker on the third or fourth line and lend a hand on power plays. As Fear the Fin points out, Gomez is not mainly a goal-scorer but rather a facilitator for teammates. He is considered an upgrade over current third-line center and Jacob from “Lost” doppelganger Michal Handzus

Sharks coach Todd McLellan has yet to make a public decision on whether Gomez will be in the lineup for tomorrow’s home opener vs. the Coyotes.
