Could Revis Island be coming to the Bay? It’s possible, if you want to believe a report by CBS Sports’ Mike Freeman.
With the Jets reportedly learning toward moving Revis in the offseason, the competition to land the league’s top shutdown corner will be tight, and the Niners might be one of the teams hoping to get in the mix. Here’s Freeman:
Sources say one of the teams highly interested is the New England Patriots, but not even the Jets, who have made some screwy decisions over the years, would trade Revis to the division-rival Patriots and, in the process, hand them a Super Bowl.
Other teams highly interested, I’m told, are Denver, San Francisco, Buffalo (not happening — division rival), and even Seattle, which already has some of the best defensive backs in the game. One team also constantly mentioned by league sources is Green Bay, though the Packers, possessors of one of the best front offices in all of sports, usually don’t give up high-round picks.
Granted, the Niners have more pressing matters to deal with at the time being. But this is something to watch for in the offseason.
The Niners had the league’s fourth-ranked pass defense this season, thanks mostly in part to the pressure by Not-Brothers Smith — Aldon and Justin, while the secondary has looked vulnerable at times in coverage.
But the 49ers D as a unit is obviously already really, really good. Add Revis to the mix? HOW IS THAT EVEN FAIR?
