After losing Delanie Walker to the Titans and having Dashon Goldson get wined and dined by the Buccaneers, the 49ers saw their Tuesday draw to a close with losing an actual starter to another team and having his back-up set up a meeting with the same team.
Not the best first day of free agency for the 49ers.
That starter on his way out of San Francisco is nose tackle Isaac Sopoaga, who signed a three-year, $12 million deal with the Eagles after meeting with them earlier in the day. Ricky Jean Francois, who would otherwise be Sopoaga’s likely replacement on the Niners, is scheduled to also meet with Philly on Wednesday.
So, while the Eagles attempt to poach Niners D-linemen, San Fran is left preparing for life with an entirely new guy in the center of that defensive front (Will Tukuafu probably isn’t going to cut it). There was chatter the 49ers were considering former Raiders defensive tackle and mugshot hall-of-famer Desmond Bryant, but the Browns beat them and everybody else in signing him on Tuesday.
For now, the Niners will kick the tires on former Chiefs D-lineman Glenn Dorsey, who they’ll reportedly host on a visit on Wednesday. The team will likely chew over a few other names before offering somebody a deal. Jean Francois still isn’t entirely out of the picture either.
But as long as that Justin Smith-Aldon Smith pairing on the right side of the field is still in tact, that’s probably all that matters.
