Late Monday the buzz was that the 49ers could be interested in Ed Reed to fill the spot in the secondary likely to be vacated by free safety Dashon Goldson. On Tuesday, however, that rumor was written off as a “smokescreen” for Reed’s benefit.
But now the 49ers are apparently pursuing a more realistic option—Packers free agent Charles Woodson.
The Niners are reportedly scheduled to meet with Woodson, 36, on Wednesday.
Woodson, who’s been to the Pro Bowl eight times as a cornerback, moved to free safety last season. He played seven games before breaking his collarbone and missing the rest of the regular season.
Goldson, out of the team’s price range, appears to be all but officially done with the Niners. The first-team All-Pro’s destination is still TBD, but the team currently in the lead to land his hard-hitting services appears to be the Bucs.
