It’s clear the 49ers want and need a lockdown cornerback. They were fleetingly linked to Darrelle Revis but ultimately chose not to bite. Now the Niners could soon be zeroing in on somebody they feel would be a better match—Nnamdi Asomugha.
According to CSN’s Matt Maiocco, both the Niners and the free agent cornerback have a “mutual interest” in each other:
The 49ers are among three teams that have shown interest in Asomugha, a source said. Pro Football Talk reports there are four teams, including the Houston Texans, Denver Broncos and Arizona Cardinals. The 49ers also were involved with Asomugha two years ago before he signed a blockbuster contract with the Philadelphia Eagles.
It wasn’t that long ago when Asomugha, 32, was let go by the Raiders and became the hottest free agent on the market. The Eagles of course picked him up for five years, $60 million as part of their infamous shopping spree in 2011. Two years and a grand total of zero playoff wins later, Philly released the inconsistent Asomugha last week.
Asomugha was a Pro Bowler for his final three years with the Raiders. The Niners think they could get that player out of Asomugha. Obviously he’ll come cheaper this go around than his $60 million price tag two years ago. It would still be a gamble but one that could have a big payoff.
