Was Saturday night the last we’ll see Ryane Clowe in a Sharks sweater?
The Clowe trade rumors have been circulating for some time already, and now there could be real action imminent ahead of Wednesday’s noon PT trade deadline with CSN’s Kevin Kurz reporting that the Sharks’ bruising winger could be spending Easter packing his bags:
A source has informed CSNCalifornia.com that the Sharks have approached Clowe’s agent about the possibility of waiving his no-trade clause, and a deal could happen as soon as Sunday.
Kurz believes the Bruins, Rangers and Canadiens are the frontrunners in the Clowe sweepstakes (if you want to call them that). The Canucks have been another team reports have previously thrown in the mix.
Why would Clowe waive his no-trade clause for any of those teams? Well, they all have far less tenuous playoff chances than the Sharks do. And also, with Clowe, 30, set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, a solid showing in the playoffs could dramatically raise his stock.
Boston has been long linked to Clowe this season and is still looking for help up front after hilariously losing out on Jarome Iginla on Thursday in near Chris Paul-to-the-Lakers fashion.
Per ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun, Sharks GM Doug Wilson wisely is looking for a first-round pick and a prospect in return for Clowe. And wouldn’t you know it—the Bruins were offering two prospects and a first rounder for Iginla, who is even five years older than Clowe. It’s not certain Clowe would yield that same haul, but the Bruins are running out of viable options and could get desperate. The Sharks like desperate! And, after all, Wilson already managed to get the Penguins to cough up two second rounders for a slow, aging, barely effective defenseman.
But it remains to be seen if Saturday’s win over the Desert Dogs was Clowe’s finale in Teal and Black. If it was, naturally, aside from getting blanked on the scoresheet, Clowe went out in the most Ryane Clowe way possible:
Ryane Clowe fittingly ends his Sharks career in the penalty box.
