A’s trade Travis Blackley to Astros

The A’s traded left-handed pitcher and huge Deez Nuts fan to the Astros on Thursday, just in time for him to potentially pitch against his former team.

The A’s begin a three-game series in Houston on Friday.

In return, Oakland receives 25-year-old minor league outfielder Jake Goebbert, who has batted .285 with 31 home runs and 237 RBI four minor league seasons.

Blackley was a solid 6-4 with a 3.86 ERA last season as a starter and long reliever for the A’s but had a horrendous spring, going 1-1 with a 14.21 ERA in seven games.

Blackley was designated for assignment last week. He spent last Saturday watching the A’s-Giants exhibition game from the Coliseum stands. It’s was a fairly interesting thing to do, but it sort of reminds us of a kid sitting on the side of a playground desperately hoping the cool kids will ask him to play.

It’s still not clear whether Blackley will be on Houston’s active roster this weekend, but he probably has a good chance given that we’re almost certain half of the Astros current roster was rolling burritos at a Chipotle two months ago.
