In a move to clear up space to sign the team’s remaining three unsigned draft picks, 49ers center Jonathan Goodwin has agreed to take a pay cut. It was either that or lose his job altogether.
Goodwin, 34, will be paid $2.5 million in base salary this season, down from the $3.7 million he was originally set to make. For all you anti-math people, that’s a $1.2 million deduction. The center will still be making $100,000 more than he made in 2012. The 49ers have now also made $1 million of his salary guaranteed. The salary cut also drops his cap figure from $5.016 million to $3.8 million.
Goodwin joined the 49ers in 2011 and has started every game at center ever since.
