Sandoval missed the Giants’ three-game set against the Cardinals last week with a left foot strain but returned to the lineup against the Blue Jays, only to aggravate the injury Saturday while playing the Diamondbacks.
The Giants finally decided this was an injury that needed rest. They’ve recalled Nick Noonan from Triple-A to fill Sandoval’s roster spot. Noonan and Joaquin Arias will likely both split time at third base in Sandoval’s absence.
We mentioned this in Monday’s post, but it’s another frustrating setback for a player who has proved to be one of the more productive bats in the Giants lineup when healthy (see: World Series, 2012). This is Sandoval’s fourth injury in the last three seasons. He missed 53 games a year ago while dealing with hand and hamstring issues.
