Jermaine O’Neal, Toney Douglas agree to 1-year deals with Warriors

A day after agreeing to a deal with Marreese Speights, the Warriors remained active on the free agent front Tuesday, reportedly agreeing to one-year deals with point guard Toney Douglas and center Jermaine O’Neal.

Douglas fill in for the departed Jarrett Jack as the Warriors’ back-up point guard on paper. But Andre Iguodala likely will precede him as the team’s back-up ball handler. Douglas is not going to be relied upon the same way Jack was — they’re different players, first off — but he does does bring defense and athleticism, so Mark Jackson is probably shimmying somewhere about that. Douglas has averaged 8.6 points and 2.4 assists in 20 minutes over five seasons. He last played with the Kings after being traded by the Dwight Howard-positioning Rockets midway through last year.

The O’Neal move obviously addresses the Warriors’ center dynamic, which currently has Festus Ezeli out with an injury until at least December. O’Neal is a solid back-up option to Andrew Bogut. O’Neal used to be one of the best big men in the game, and age (34) has obviously caught up with him, but he’s still a good option off the bench these days. He averaged 8.3 points and 5.3 rebounds in 18 minutes on a really, really bad Suns team last season. It’ll be interesting to see who between O’Neal and Ezeli gets the second-string minutes once Ezeli is fully healthy.

The two deals have apparently filled out the remainder of the what’s appears to be a prettay, prettay good-looking roster. Here’s how the lineup projects as of right now:

Starters:

PG Stephen Curry
G/F Andre Iguodala
G/F Klay Thompson/Harrison Barnes
PF David Lee
C Andrew Bogut

Bench:

G/F Klay Thompson/Harrison Barnes
F/C Marreese Speights
PG Toney (that’s with an “E”) Douglas
C Jermaine O’Neal
F Draymond Green
C Festus Ezeli (injured)
G Kent Bazemore
G Nemanja Nedovic (if not stashed overseas)

The Warriors also have Scott Machado, Dwayne Jones and Kevin Murphy on nonguaranteed contracts.
