Grant Balfour and Sergio Romo have been named as late additions to Tuesday’s All-Star Game. Both closers were named as replacements for pitchers who won’t be able to participate in the game.
Balfour will get to rage his way to Citi Field as a replacement A’s teammate Bartolo Colon, who won’t play because he started against the Red Sox on Sunday. Balfour is the only closer in the majors perfect on save opportunities with 25 and has converted a franchise record 43 straight.
Romo and Pirates reliever Mark Melancon were named replacements for Pittsburgh’s Jeff Locke and the Nationals’ Jordan Zimmermann, who has a neck injury. Romo is 3-4 with a 2.86, 21 saves and 38 strikeouts in 34.2 innings. Romo is now the fourth player on a fourth-place Giants team named to the ASG. The perks of winning the World Series.
