Ryan Vogelsong is targeting a tentative return to the Giants for Aug. 9 after breaking his hand when he was hit by a pitch during an at bat two months ago.
Vogelsong, who underwent surgery to insert pins in his mangled hand, threw in two bullpen sessions over the All-Star break and could begin a rehab stint in the minors next week. The plan is for the right-hander to make around three or four starts in Class-A and Double-A. If the hand checks out medically by then, the Aug. 9 home game against the Orioles could mark his return to Giants rotation.
“I’ve got to go through it and make sure I can bounce back,” Vogelsong said. “I’m assuming everything will go well. It’s getting better every time (I throw). The timing is coming back. The pitches feel better coming out of my hand and my mechanics are coming back.”
Manager Bruce Bochy said Vogelsong needs to reach about 80 pitches in a start before he is activated.
“We’re going to make sure he’s ready,” Bochy said, adding that Vogelsong will rejoin the rotation, not pitch in relief.
Vogelsong is 2-4 with a 7.19 ERA and 1.79 WHIP to go along with a dreadful -1.7 WAR.
