Ron Jaworski: Colin Kaepernick could be ‘one of the greatest quarterbacks ever’

When you consider Colin Kaepernick has just 10 career starts (including three in the playoffs) under his belt, some of the expectations placed on him this season are a tad ridiculous. It’s Super Bowl or bust for the Niners and everybody is relying on a 25-year-old with probably less starts than tattoos to get them there. I’m not saying it won’t happen, but it sounds a little unfair, no?

Anyway, Ron Jaworski, who hasn’t taken a breath while talking into a microphone since around 1996, wants to do you one better. Super Bowl? That’s cute! Jaws instead is going all-in with his Kaepernick hand. He’s looking much farther into the future. At the Mount Rushmore of quarterbacks! Here’s what he said on ESPN on Wednesday:

“I truly believe Colin Kaepernick could be one of the greatest quarterbacks ever,” Jaworski said. “I love his skill set. I think the sky’s the limit.”

Leave it to Jaworski to lay it on thick with an NFL QB and make liberal use of superlatives. Kaepernick could very well become one of the all-time greats, but maybe first we should see him finish a full season and whether NFL defenses have learned to slow him down.

To his credit, Kap responded to the compliments with humility:

“I’m working,” he responded. “To me, it’s a great honor he said that. I’m very flattered by it. But at the same time, I haven’t played a full season yet.”

Very wise answer. And thank you, Colin, for not dropping a “one game at a time” because that answer was just asking for one.

But, yes, it’s a gradual process. First try being best QB in the division this year. Because it’s no guarantee he’ll have a better season than Russell Wilson, who FYI has eight more starts. Then look at trying to best the other top passers of this generation, young guys with bright futures like Andrew Luck, RG3 and Matt Ryan. After all that, maybe then we can decide if Colin Kaepernick was among the best that ever threw a football. He certainly has the tools, the team and the coach to help get him there.

And also maybe along the way it wouldn’t hurt to try working on becoming the best dressed quarterback ever. Because I still don’t know what on Earth this was.
