The 49ers on Thursday cleared up one position battle but further complicated another one.
The team announced it has signed veteran quarterback Seneca Wallace and waived Colin Kaepernick’s BFF and co-tenant, receiver Ricardo Lockette.
The Wallace signing likely indicates Jim Harbaugh & Co. are not very pleased with the quarterbacks on the roster not named Kaepernick. While Kaepernick has seen minimal playing time in the preseason, as he prepares to begin his quest to prove Ron Jaworski correct, Colt McCoy, Scott Tolzien and BJ Daniels have seen most of the time under center, but none of the three has separated himself from the rest to become Kaepernick’s top clipboard holder. Wallace, 33, has 21 starts in seven seasons with the Seahawks and Browns and was released on Monday by the Saints.
The speedy Lockette was a member of the Niners practice squad last season. He was Kaepernick’s training partner during the offseason and is his current roommate, but he never was able to stand out in a crowded 49ers receivers corps this preseason.
Potentially awkward times ahead in the Kaepernick-Lockette household.
