49ers

Here’s how close the 49ers were to (maybe) not beating the Packers (Photo)

The 49ers are headed to the next round of the playoffs thanks to Phil Dawson, a.k.a. Not David Akers, coming through in the clutch with a game-winning field goal as time expired. But it wouldn’t have happened if Packers cornerback Davon House’s arms had been just a couple inches closer together.

It’s clear the ball went straight through a leaping House’s arms. House, who was rushing from the outside, was right there. He could have extended the game and his team’s season (albeit momentarily) if he could have just got his arms together. Here it is in GIF form:

OK, fine. He was offsides when the ball was snapped, so the potential block would have been nullified, with the Niners re-kicking for the game five-yards closer. But with field goals, sometimes you’re a botched snap or a poor hold away from boofing even the easiest of chip shots. And on a field that looked like it provided about the same footing as a frat house bathroom, something could have gone awry. Am I overthinking this? I’m probably overthinking this.
