There was speculation that the Giants might soon be removing the mightily struggling Ryan Vogelsong from the rotation. They’ll have to do that anyway now, and it’ll be after what was easily his best outing of the season.

The Giants are reporting that Vogelsong suffered a fractured bone in his right pitching hand after being hit by a pitch during an at-bat in the fifth inning of Monday’s win over the Nationals. Until that moment, he pitched five shutout innings with two strikeouts (he also got credited his second win of the season).

As for what bone is broken and how long he’ll be out, here’s his wifey with a scoop:

Ryan has a dislocated joint in the pinky finger of his pitching hand. It’s broken above & below finger. Surgery tomorrow, out 6 weeks.

— Nicole Vogelsong (@nicolevogelsong) May 21, 2013

Bruce Bochy said as much after the game.

No official word yet as to who takes Vogelson’s spot in the rotation. But a likely candidate is Chad Gaudin, currently the long reliever out of the bullpen. He has a 2.10 ERA in 25.2 innings this season and a 4.54 career ERA.

Sharks defenseman Jason Demers has been out of the lineup since April 18 with a sprained left ankle, but he could return to the ice for Tuesday’s Game 4 against the Kings.

Demers says he’s ready to play, but the ultimate decision is with the coaching staff. If he is inserted back into the lineup, it may be at forward, with Adam Burish still unable to play, Raffi Torres suspended and Martin Havlat once again back on the injured list after failing to make it through Game 3.

“I’ll go in wherever they want me to right now,” said Demers, who also practiced on defense Monday.

Demers’ experience at forward goes back to the 2009-10 campaign when he played up front towards the end of the season and the first round of the playoffs. Here’s Todd McLellan talking about the possibility of doing that again, and as per usual, he’s not tipping his hand:

“We were preparing in case we would like to use that option. If we dress seven, we may move somebody up to play some shifts,” said McLellan, who face the challenge of replacing the once-again injured Marty Havlat. “It’s an option as he (Demers) gets healthier, and times go on.”

Well, I’m sure beating up an old man and nearly giving him a heart attack wasn’t how San Jose SaberCats defensive coordinator Cedric Walker was planning to celebrate a victory.

The SaberCats assistant was arrested and charged with battery of a person 65 years or older, which of course is a felony in Florida, and simple battery for allegedly pushing 68-year-old Jacksonville Sharks assistant GM Tim Johnson against a wall multiple times during an ugly altercation on Saturday following San Jose’s own beatdown of the Sharks, 57-36, in a clash of two of the Arena Football League’s best teams.

Walker, 42, was reportedly released from a Jacksonville jail on Sunday. Johnson was also reportedly released from the hospital after receiving treatment for chest pains and a concussion.

According to the SaberCats, the incident arose after the team’s coaches were on the receiving end of “alleged racial epithets,” which would make this whole incident even worse than it already was. It’s unclear, however, if the racist remarks came from Johnson.

Here’s The Florida Times-Union’s account of the melee, which involved multiple members of each team and required “security and about 25 officers to regain control of the situation”:

Moments after the game, a 57-36 SaberCats’ win, coaches, players and team representatives from both clubs argued in a hallway outside their locker rooms at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena, said Times-Union sports writer Don Coble, who witnessed the incident.

Coble told police several San Jose coaches and players confronted Sharks Assistant General Manager Tim Johnson, 68, and the argument quickly escalated. Johnson was pushed against the wall, and when he turned to walk away he was pushed again.

Coble said Jacksonville trainer Josh Gregoire tried to step in but was struck in the head, though that allowed Johnson, followed by SaberCats personnel, to make a dash for a nearby foyer where he found police. Johnson then collapsed, complaining of chest pains, Coble said. … Gregoire suffered cuts on his forehead and a broken nose.

(Too bad there wasn’t any biting, otherwise we could have had some fun with this headline.)

Via BANG, here’s the SaberCats’ response:

The SaberCats called the incident “unfortunate” in a statement released by the team Sunday.

The altercation, according to the SaberCats statement, stemmed from “a verbal confrontation involving alleged racial epithets directed toward members of the SaberCats coaching staff by a front office official of the Sharks. The Jacksonville Police Department is currently investigating the situation and the SaberCats organization will have no further comment at this time.”

The AFL will also launch its own investigation.

Oh, how the tables turned against the Kings at the end of Game 3. After being on the wrong end of a miraculous comeback in Game 2 thanks to a late two-man advantage, the Sharks were the ones who capitalized on penalties late to capture Game 3 on a Logan Couture overtime winner.

The Kings were already a man down with under a minute in regulation after a Robyn Regehr hooking minor when Trevor Lewis was also sent off for goalie interference with five seconds remaining on the clock. The Kings argued Lewis was pushed into Antti Niemi, to no avail. That gave the Sharks 1:19 of 5-on-3 heading into overtime. It was looking a whole lot like de ja vu.

The Regehr penalty expired without a Sharks score. But not long after, still a man up, Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Couture played tic-tac-toe to blast the puck past Jonathan Quick to secure the win. The Kings’ series lead is now down to 2-1.

It was a sequence of events that brought Quick to seeing red. Watch as the Kings’ netminder throws a hissy fit and stalks out the officials immediately after the game ended (hope you also enjoy the totally related and amusing soccer clip afterward):

Not so fun having a penalty dictate the result of a game, huh, Quick? For his efforts, Quick was assessed a game misconduct for “abuse of an official.” By rule, that automatically results in an astronomical $200 fine. Man, hope Quick doesn’t break the bank paying that one off. (For those wondering, that’s $99,800 less than the Sharks were fined thanks to Doug Wilson’s diatribe.)

Quick also faces the possibility of additional discipline, though, let’s be real, it won’t be a suspension. The chances of winning the Powerball jackpot might have been greater than that happening.

Looks as if Sharks GM Doug Wilson will not be getting away with the giant middle finger he gave to the NHL in the form of his acrimonious statement on Friday about the “grossly unfair” Raffi Torres suspension.

That statement read in part:

Comparing the facts of this incident against the actual wording of Rule 48.1, it appears that the NHL has not only made an inappropriate application of this rule but is trying to make an example out of a player who is being judged on past events [...] We are proud of the work Raffi has put in to successfully adjust his game. Although it’s unfortunate that Jarret was injured on the play, we feel this decision is grossly unfair to the Raffi, his teammates and our fans.

(You can read the entire 436-word harangue here.)

On Saturday, the franchise saw the heavy repercussions of Wilson’s venting. According to David Pollak, the Sharks have been fined $100,000 by the league for the remarks—$25 large for commenting on disciplinary actions during the 48-hour window they can be appealed and $75 grand for “the inappropriate nature of the comments.”

We would say we’re looking forward to the Sharks’ response to the latest form of punishment being leveled against them, but they’ve probably learned their lesson by now.

The good news: Chris Young is a step closer to returning to the lineup, as the A’s reinstated the outfielder from the DL on Saturday. The bad news (well, for one person): the A’s had to once again designate first baseman Daric Barton for assignment to make room for Young.

In eight games since returning to the A’s on May 8, Barton, what’s new, hit a woeful .143/.217/.286 and had a -0.1 WAR. Young’s return and Barton’s departure means Brandon Moss, who had been playing in right field as outfielders were dropping like flies, can return to first base.

Barton will have to clear waivers before being sent down to Triple-A. He was previously DFA’ed after spring training this year. Nobody else wanted him. So continues the sadz face that has been Daric Barton major league voyage.

Martin Havlat has been missing from action since he went down with an undisclosed lower-body injury in Game 1 of the first-round series against the Canucks. But Havlat is expected to be back in the Sharks lineup in Game 3 Saturday against the Kings.

And not a moment too soon.

In an 0-2 hole, the Sharks need whatever help they can get on their lines, with Adam Burish out for the series due to injury and Raffi Torres also out for the series because the NHL was frontin’.

“There’s a good chance he’ll play,” Coach Todd McLellan said after his team’s morning skate before Game 3 of its series with the Los Angeles Kings. “He’s come to see me, he thinks he’s ready to go so we’ll find a spot for him.”

Havlat has been a disappointment since the Sharks brought him over in trade with Minnesota for Dany Heatley two years ago, but the winger has a knack for breaking out in the playoffs. In 73 career postseason appearances, he’s tallied 53 points.

Where Havlat will play is still open to debate. It boils down to two likely scenarios: put him on the third line with Tommy Wingels and Scott Gomez, who’s played well on the line after the shake-up in the Torres aftermath, or match him with Logan Couture and Patrick Marleau on the second line and bump Joe Pavelski down the third, where he’s previously played well.

Turns out Brett Anderson’s injury status is far worse than believed. The A’s opening day starter, already nursing a sprained right ankle, will be out for at least the next four weeks with what the team called stress fracture in his right foot. Officially it’s a navicular stress fracture and will require rest and wearing a walking boot.

Via John Hickey:

The A’s are saying the injury is not related to the sprained right ankle that put him on the disabled list May 1. He pitched in an injury rehabilitation assignment on Sunday but felt additional pain in his foot the next day. That led to the determination of the stress fracture on the inside of his right foot.

The A’s medical team will wait a month before reevaluating Anderson, so it is likely he will not be available to pitch until sometime around the All-Star break, if then.

GAH. It’s almost as if Anderson and Andrew Bogut are in some contest over whose body can completely break down first. In the last year, Anderson has missed time thanks to Tommy John Surgery, an oblique strain, a sprained ankle and now a stress fracture in his foot. That’s enough for a bingo. I’m probably forgetting a few injuries, but you get the point.

You remember Mike Goodson, don’t you? He was with the Raiders last season — his only season in Oakland — and saw time in the Raiders backfield behind Darren McFadden. It was a brief stay, but he had a decent year, averaging 6.3 yards per carry when he wasn’t hurt—good enough to get $7 million ($1.925 million guaranteed) from the Jets in free agency in March.

Well, his stint with the Jets already hit a speed bump early Friday morning when he was arrested after an SUV he was a passenger in was pulled over by state police on I-80 in Denville, N.J. The driver was charged with DWI. Goodson was apparently also so shithammered that he had to be taken to the hospital.

After police searched the vehicle, both Goodson and the driver, Garant Evans, were slapped with a host of ugly charges: possession of marijuana (under 50 grams), possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a loaded handgun, possession of hollow-point ammunition. Police say the weapon in question was a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun.

Bail for Goodson was set at $50,000.
